Robotic Surgery for
Urological Cancer
in Chennai
Robot-assisted surgery on the da Vinci Xi platform for prostate,
kidney and adrenal cancers — a few keyhole incisions instead of
one large one, meaning less blood loss, less pain and a faster
return to normal life, with the precision that cancer control demands.
What is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgery is a refined form of keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery. The surgeon operates while seated at a console beside the patient, viewing a magnified, high-definition 3D image of the operating field and guiding tiny wristed instruments passed through a few small incisions.
An important point patients often ask about: the robot does not operate on its own. Every movement is controlled by the surgeon in real time. The system simply translates the surgeon's hand movements into more precise, tremor-free motion — and lets the instruments bend and rotate in ways the human wrist cannot, which matters in the deep, confined spaces of the pelvis and around the kidney.
For urological cancer surgery, that combination of magnified vision and fine control supports careful dissection close to critical nerves and blood vessels which is central to preserving function while removing the cancer.
The Da Vinci Xi Advantage
-
Magnified 3D HD vision — up to 10× magnification inside the body
-
Wristed instruments — a range of motion greater than the human hand
-
Tremor filtration — steady, scaled, precise movements
-
Small incisions — a few keyholes rather than one large cut
-
Surgeon-controlled — you are operated on by Dr. Jayaraj, not a machine
Benefits for suitable patients
advantages over traditional open surgery — though the right approach
always depends on the individual and the tumour.
Less Blood Loss
Precise dissection and magnified vision typically mean reduced bleeding and a lower need for transfusion.
Smaller Incisions
A few keyhole cuts instead of one long incision — less scarring and, for many, less post-operative pain.
Shorter Hospital Stay
Many patients are mobile early and go home sooner than after equivalent open surgery.
Faster Recovery
A quicker return to everyday activities and work, guided by your recovery and the procedure performed.
Nerve & Function Sparing
Fine control supports nerve-sparing in prostate surgery and kidney-sparing in renal surgery, where the cancer allows.
Precise Cancer Clearance
Magnified vision helps with careful, complete removal in the deep, confined spaces of the pelvis and retroperitoneum.
Robotic uro-oncology procedures
— each explained in detail on its own page.
Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (RARP)
Complete removal of the prostate for localised prostate cancer, with nerve-sparing technique to help protect urinary continence and erectile function where oncologically safe.
Robotic Partial Nephrectomy
Kidney-sparing removal of a renal tumour while preserving as much healthy kidney as possible — the preferred approach for many smaller kidney cancers.
Robotic Radical Nephrectomy
Removal of the whole kidney for larger or more complex renal tumours, performed through keyhole incisions with a robotic approach in suitable cases.
Robotic Adrenalectomy
Precise removal of an adrenal gland tumour from its deep position above the kidney, where magnified robotic vision and fine control are especially valuable.
Robotic vs Laparoscopic vs Open
depends on the tumour, your anatomy and your overall health — discussed
fully at consultation.
| OPEN SURGERY | LAPAROSCOPIC | ROBOTIC (DA VINCI XI) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incision | One large incision | Several small ports | A few keyhole ports |
| Vision | Direct, 2D | Magnified 2D screen | Magnified 3D HD |
| Instrument control | Hands | Rigid instruments | Wristed & tremor-filtered |
| Blood loss | Higher | Lower | Typically low |
| Hospital stay | Longer | Shorter | Often shortest |
| Recovery | Slower | Faster | Often fastest |

Robotic Surgery FAQs
Nerve-sparing prostate surgery aims to protect urinary control and erectile function, and the robotic approach supports this. Whether it is possible depends on the extent of the cancer — the priority is always safe, complete cancer removal, and this is explained honestly in your case.
Cost varies with the procedure, the hospital and your insurance cover. You will receive a clear explanation of the expected costs during your consultation before proceeding.
