RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery) removes kidney stones using a flexible scope and laser that travel through natural body passages, avoiding external incisions.

RIRS involves no cuts at all — the flexible scope passes through the natural urinary passage. It is done under anaesthesia, so you feel nothing during it. Afterwards, a temporary stent can cause mild urgency or discomfort for a few days, which is easily managed.
RIRS is well suited to small and medium kidney stones, and to stones in positions that are hard to reach, such as the lower pole. Very large or staghorn stones are usually better cleared with mini PCNL. Your scan helps decide the best option.
A DJ stent is a soft, temporary tube placed between the kidney and bladder to keep urine draining and help the kidney settle after surgery. It is often placed for a short time after RIRS and removed later in a quick procedure. It can cause mild urinary symptoms while in place.
RIRS is usually a day-care or short-stay procedure, and most people return to routine activities within a day or two, avoiding heavy exertion briefly. Any stent is removed after a short interval.
RIRS effectively removes existing stones but does not alter the underlying chemical factors that cause stone formation.
